Docked one star for the flimsy side pockets. Desert Khaki Verified Purchase. Three weeks ago, I accidentally dropped my Kelty Redstart 28 backpack in a puddle of pee yes, really and left it there all day.

Well the pee dried and absorbed into the pack. Needless to say, it smelled terrible. My first inclination was to just wash it, but then I started to think about it and to evaluate the bag Maybe a higher power was telling me that it was time for me to buy a new bag.

And as I thought about it more, I realized there were several things about the Redstart that annoyed me.

Although it is a fantastic bag that has served me well, there were some issues. The way the bag opens. The two buckles that hold the exterior quick-access panel are placed in the most awkward position for accessing the main only compartment because they are so close together and close to the top of the bag.

So you basically have to undo the buckles to get into the compartment. The quick-access panel is awkward.

The side pockets are generally good and hold stuff in place fairly well, but they are very shallow. You can put a Nalgene-style bottle in them, and it will generally ride pretty securely, but I always have this nagging worry that it will fall out if I lean too far forward, etc.

In their defense, though, they are super-easy to access by just reaching around. It is actually pretty awkward to use because it is located on the inside of the front panel of the main compartment there are no exterior pockets.

Since I carry my Redstart every day, the sling bag goes straight into the main compartment i. This sounds easy enough, but doing it several times a day becomes annoying.

So with all that in mind, and after looking at multiple packs, I finally decided on the Osprey Quasar. I like Kelty as a brand, but I like Osprey, too, so I trust both brands.

The Quasar seems to be the answer to all of the above issues. It is also the same size 28L. Initial, pre-purchase thoughts on the Osprey Quasar: Although it also has two buckles on the main compartment like the Redstart, the buckles are placed farther down than the Redstart's buckles i.

There is no quick-access panel, but I think the Quasar's bungee compression option is actually better, especially for things like sandals or a newspaper.

The tension holding the items against the bag is a welcome change from the loose panel of the Redstart.

Plus, the Quasar has extra compartments besides the main compartment, so I can actually put smaller stuff in the bag without having to open the main compartment.

The side pockets appear to be better-designed. They are deeper, and are made of a stretchy compression material, rather than the mesh material of the Redstart.

That will be an absolute godsend. I take trips fairly often, and I have never brought a laptop with me.

That way, I can process and upload pictures on the road and surf the internet where wifi is available with something other than my phone.

To be clear, I still think the Redstart is a good bag. Also, the Quasar is a good 7 ounces heavier than the Redstart. But I think the added conveniences explained above, plus the laptop protection option if I choose to go that route , will outweigh pun not intended the added weight of the Quasar in the long run.

The first thing I did as soon as I got the Quasar was cut off the waist straps. With that out of the way, I began using it. I transferred everything from my Redstart into the Quasar.

I started using the little pouches inside the pocket right away, before I even carried the bag for the first time. The first thing I noticed as soon as I put the bag on was the padding choice on the back of the bag.

In lieu of the Kelty and many, many other bag companies choice of two pads on the sides, with a hollow spot where your spine is, the Quasar has a big, round pad right in the middle.

After carrying it for a day, I got the hang of how I wanted the shoulder straps and sternum strap adjusted. After the first day, I can say that it feels just fine.

I had to pack a bunch of stuff into the bag on the way home from work a heavy jacket, some gloves, etc. I tried carrying the Quasar from my car to my house today on one shoulder, and it was surprisingly doable.

So far, so good! Day 14 Okay, two weeks down. I am very happy with the Quasar. I do not notice the extra 7 ounces, at all.

The front organizer pocket, stash pocket, and tall, mesh side pockets are the bomb. That was impossible with the Redstart. I always meant to do that with the Redstart, but I never did.

As predicted, the bungee compression works very well. The top carry handle is also ridiculously wide and sturdy. That will be very welcome when lugging the pack around in my hand in an airport, etc.

I docked one star today. I agonized over this decision because I see that 25 people found my review helpful, meaning my review has been somewhat influential.

I don't want to give the wrong impression here, so I thought very hard about docking a star. So why did I dock a star? Take a look at the attached picture.

The mesh material, although very flexible, is pretty flimsy. It is starting to break down from holding items. I think these pockets will have holes in them before too long.

Even then, I wouldn't necessarily have docked a star Osprey could have done this, too. In fact, they should have done it, too. So it's a design flaw.

I'm 6'3" and lbs. I run with this to and from work twice a week, and walk to work the other three days with it.

This is by far the best backpack that I have owned for commuting. It's well-built, and I'm able to jog with my laptop, charger, spare clothes, and more without any issues with chaffing.

It's a comfortable backpack. Good adjustability Strong construction Collapsible with adjustment straps to keep weight from bouncing Good styling Well though-out storage for laptop, papers, books, and more Cons: The extra organization pockets and internal mesh pockets in the front of the backpack means I can keep all my little bits and peices organised and close to hand throughout the day.

The side pockets are stretchy, and they stretch — a lot — They have a way of molding to whatever type of water bottle you place in them and keep them tight and secure.

The laptop and tablet sleeves on the inner backside of the Quasar are designed to be accessed easily and in practice they are.

The Pockets are lined with a soft scratch free fabric to both protect from scratches and help prevent damage from impacts. The laptop sleeve dimensions are around The Quasar has a large compartment for your laptop and a smaller soft-zippered sleeve for your tablet.

The Osprey Comet is a smaller daypack for shorter commute times and people who really only need to take a laptop and their essentials to and from work.

Being smaller it also carries better with more stability while on a bike. The Osprey Nebula is a larger backpack offering a total of 34 litres of space compared to the quasar that is an extra 6 litres.

Depending on your needs, choose accordingly. I would label the Nebula as a large commuter good for those carrying a full change of clothes and shoes for after the gym.
